What if a whale appeared out of nowhere, in the middle of the city?
In May 2020, Montrealers witnessed an unlikely and magical spectacle on the St. Lawrence River. Between the landmark Clock Tower and the Grande Roue de Montréal Ferris wheel, a whale fin sliced through the river’s surface, announcing the arrival of a young humpback whale that had strayed more than 400 km from its usual habitat. Its presence captivated the city and the country at a time of isolation and confusion.
Whalefall is a documentary theatre piece inspired by this event.
Based on interviews with experts, the play explores our deep connection with whales, intertwining science and poetry, culture and ecosystem, to reveal the richness of their aquatic world.
Whalefall combines large-scale puppets, object theatre, and original music to convey scientific discoveries in a poetic and accessible way.
Language: English (with French surtitles)
Running time: 70 minutes
Techniques: Large-scale puppets and object theatre
The show will be followed by a talkback with the artists.
