First came the novel by Simon Boulerice, inspired by a real-life tragedy that took place in the United States, in 2008. This is the story of Leticia, born Larry King; her murder by Brandon, with whom she’s in love; and all the characters who revolve around them. It’s a tale of love and courage that ends badly, a sad story of transphobia. Why does daring to be yourself sometimes confront the Other to the degree that they commit the irreparable?

At the heart of this story, the construction of the self emerges, with its host of questions about desire and the vast range of possibilities to be considered when one leaves childhood behind in order to simply exist. In giving voice and body to Leticia and her deepest aspirations, this show reveals her beauty in its entirety. This is theatre that serves a valuable purpose, as it tries to mend humanity when, at times, it breaks down.

Company

Founded in 2016 by Caroline Guyot, Barbaque Compagnie was born out of a desire to explore theatrical works, both the classics and more contemporary works, using objects and materials to enhance the acting, set design and storytelling. Barbaque Compagnie combines the whimsy of object theatre with the requirements of theatrical texts, without losing sight of the need to be accessible to as wide an audience as possible.
