The installation ᑲᑕᔾᔭᐅᓯᕙᓪᓛᑦ Katajjausivallaat, le rythme bercé was created specially for the Festival de Casteliers. It is presented in conjunction with FREEZE! by Dutch performance and visual artist Nick Steur. The installation includes a sculpture made of stones balanced on one another, accompanied by a soundtrack of traditional throat singing. The balancing stones sway to the sounds of this age-old singing kept alive by generations of women including Nancy Saunders, who proudly carries on this tradition with this contemporary work of art.

Originally from Kuujjuaq, in Nunavik, Nancy Saunders is a multidisciplinary Inuit artist who studies at Concordia University where she explores a range of media, including drawing, painting and sculpture. Her creative process blends traditional Inuit art with modern forms by exploring themes rooted in her ancestral heritage but using contemporary art approaches. In so doing, she hopes to sustain and renew the vitality of Inuit art.

Nancy Saunders’ work was shown at the Montréal Visual Arts Centre’s McClure Gallery in 2015. More recently, she was selected to create an original artistic piece for the Canadian Museum of Nature’s Canada Goose Arctic Gallery as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary.
