FESTIVAL DE CASTELIERS OPENING NIGHT

Festival de Casteliers will open with the screening of Mulan. Unfortunately, Shanghai Puppet Theatre had to cancel its visit to Montréal because of the current situation in China. Despite this, Casteliers present a high definition video of this spectacular, almost cinematic show that combines shadow puppetry with projections on a giant screen. This screening will allow us get a glimpse of the 12 puppeteers working behind the screen, so we can appreciate their truly extraordinary silhouette manipulation, thus maintaining the essence of the live performance of the show.

Adapted from the traditional Chinese folk tale, the show tells the story of Hua Mulan, a girl living during the Wei Dynasty who excels in martial arts and is wise beyond her years. Mulan decides to disguise herself as a man so she can join the army. Her courage in battle and perseverance bring back peace to her country. When she returns home, she humbly refuses to accept credit for her victory.
